Guess who got to play SSFIV for four hours today! :D
Totally out of the blue, and thanks to one of my friends here noticing that someone he knew well that has his own gaming review site was actually playing the game on his friends list, invited him to chat, found out that he needed a few guys to test and ask questions about the game since he personally wasn't a Street Fighter IV player, and a 45 minute drive later we were playing SSFIV!
I dabbled with quite a bit of characters there, and for starters, it was the final version of the game - what do I mean by final? I'm talking boxart, case, sealed, able to play over XBL final - why is this game just not on the shelves yet, I dunno. He had six copies of the 360 version, and four copies of the PS3 version, for the launch party that will be going down on the 18th of April - and me and the friend of mine could have even gone home with our own copies of the game if we were working for him - oh well... :lol
For starters, the horrendous loading time we've been seeing all this time is gone as Capcom promised - 360 version loads as fast as SFIV did while installed, and I didn't ask, but I;m sure that he didn't install the game. Online works as I mentioned before, but the guy said that Capcom made it strictly forbidden to play online, but it works.
Now, character-wise, I'm going to say this - Dee Jay is the truth. He's better than I could have ever imagined, and he can combo so damn easily, and so fluid as well. Unless the final changed dramatically from whatever build some guy said that he sucked in, I don't know what the hell he was talking about - he was my favorite character to use tonight, easily.
Max outs feel as fast as Guile's Sonic Booms, LK Dread Kick is too good, same for LK upkick - I beat so many things with them both, so the invulnerability on startup that Seth talked about for LK Dread Kick is still in - jumping MK is good as well, and you have so many options when you land that jump in LP, LP, MP - it's all up to you - and following it up with EX Machine Gun Upper into EX Max Out juggled gives some great damage. I tried to land anti-air crouching HK into Climax beat but I didn't get any proper opportunities to use the slide as an anti-air - oh well...
Speaking of Climax Beat, I remember watching a video of it not working properly at all as an anti-air, but it connected for the full Ultra for me tonight, so you either have to make sure that it doesn't start up while the opponent is way too high, or it really changed for the better - but EX MGU into Climax Beat works every time in the corner, not outside of it though...
He's just so solid, definitely my new main.
Second guy who's main character material? T. Hawk.
We've seen the videos, but the man is just a fucking tank, both when giving AND taking damage - Condor Dive beat out so many things, and it looks like his jumping HP beats out even more more than that - his crouching LP beats out so many specials as well - I was knocking Dudley out of his Machine Gun Blow like nobody's business, among other specials from other characters... he can combo into his uppercut as easily as Ryu, his Typhoon grabs are so quick, and make you want to cringe whenever you see him crash down and watch the opponent's life drop, and he practically doesn't even need to use meter, you can just be cruel and hit someone with his Super which itself does crazy damage - and his Ultra's got a hell of a range as well.
The man.
Right after T. Hawk? Cody, as expected.
So easy to combo with, and really feels safe to use - I played a good bit with him, and it's really easy to forget you have the Ruffian Kicks, Zonk Knuckle, Bad Spray and a knife to shank fools with when you can rely pretty well with Rocks and his comboability into Criminal Upper - I really, really loved using him, you can find yourself in trouble sometimes with him, but that was probably because every time I picked Cody, my friend was playing with a vanilla character so it could have been the inexperience vs. an experienced character, but Cody is solid as hell as well, and can really put the pressure on people.
Hakan is going to get A LOT of people with his 360 grab, and even more with his Ultra II - I've never seen his grabs catch anyone as fast as I've seen them happen today, whether it was sped up for the final build, or people just weren't following up with it, but he can chip into it so fast, and if you land a Focus Attack, even if it's just Level 2, he can dash in and before he even looks like he's about to stop dashing, you're already grabbed. I got caught jumping into Oil Combination Hold (Ultra II) way too many times - you have to, HAVE to stop jumping when he's got it, straight up - I know it was really because it was my first time facing Hakan, but man, sometimes I straight up forgot, until I hear the Ultra initiate and then say "ah shit". Very good, although he can have some problems against certain characters - but one thing though, his 360 + K grab caught every single one of Fuerte's aerial Run moves (Tostada Press, Tortilla Propeller, but I didn't use Fajita Buster but I'd assume that it'll be the same as well)...
Dudley isn't going to be one of my rotated characters but I tried him out regardless - buuuuuuut - I knew that you should be able to follow up EX Machine Gun Blow with another MGB, but I couldn't follow it up not even once with LP MGB - he always knocked them away too far at the end, further than any of the YouTube videos ever showed - I also had the same thing with LP Uppercut - I tried on many occasions to follow it up with Corkscrew Cross but again, it didn't even touch his fist - this could all be my mistake with execution, but one time I did Ultra at the very end of his recovery, the instant his feet touched the ground, and it straight up whiffed - so either it's been changed for the final version, or it was just me.
His Target Combos come out so easy - no 1 frame perfect-timing bullcrap, just piano that and watch the blows fly... nothing else to say really about him, he's just a combo machine.
I got some serious disappointment with Makoto though :( - you really, really need to practice with her if you want to be dominant with her... first of all, don't even try to walk, as she crawls even slower than Sagat, you're gonna have to dash wherever you want to go - which is crazy fast as you all know though, but the fact that you can Focus Absorb her QCF + P is a bit hurtful though - I admittedly didn't throw out more pokes to see what had good priority and such, and I managed to dish out some serious damage here and there, but there were times where I felt real clumsy with her, more than any other character tonight.
Not saying she's total trash or something, but you're gonna have to put in work if you want that win with her, and really come up with game plans to win - her QCB + P is really nice to deceive with, and is good to catch people off guard with - unless something really changed with it, and I can probably be wrong about this, but it seemed like the non-EX version hits overhead as well, when I read sometime ago that it didn't, or maybe my friend just never blocked at the right time when I did it, or it comboed, I'm not sure.
Guy is real nice - he looks like he'll be a great tricky character to mess people up with, and his run moves are real fast - his chain combo into grab ender (LP, MP, HP, down+HK) is great to continue into wake up games as he tosses you over to the ground over right next to him, and it was the first time I've seen it done, and I don't remember seeing it in the older movelist screens a few weeks ago...
Adon is much, much nicer than I expected - I've read so-so impressions from him, but in this final version, he is just so agile, fast, a combo machine, and he's got such good range with his pokes - standing HK is real good - he's like Sagat on crack, or for a better comparison, Sagat and Cammy's lovechild - I definitely will be messing around with him and putting him into rotation.
Bison is just as solid as before, and as we already knew, Psycho Crusher is so good right now - used it a whole lot tonight compared to almost never aside from the EX version in SFIV. Psycho Punisher is excellent as an anti-air, and it was no joke when people said that it randomny crosses up - I swore it was going to land in front of my friend when it all of a sudden landed behind him at the very last second - there was no way anyone could have blocked that in time.
Nothing much to say about Fuerte other than it felt good to not feel like he was as weak as a wet paper bag when it comes to health - now everyone is practically on the same page right now, and it's great. Ultra II is CRAZY fast as hell as we all know, with great damage - nothing new to add there at all...
Other sad news that I already knew about but it sucked to see were Honda's and Balrog's new Ultras, Honda's especially - I did Honda's U2 right next to my friend, standing still, and he was able to jump backwards easily out of it - great damage if you connect, but that's a big if. Dirty Bull does some serious stun though, it had been a few seconds since my last hit connected, but it was still an instant dizzy when I landed it - very nice, but I know it has some start-up time as well.
I played with a few other characters and fought against a few others as well, including using Juri, who seriously really is easy street - she's really, really good, and easy to win with, and easy to put the pressure on people, and really play keep-out on top of that as well with her projectile storing - you can use her for the first time and just rack up the wins...
Abel's Ultra II is as good as I've known as well, and fast is an understatement for its speed, the damage is nuts as well - it's like watching vanilla Sagat make a comeback after landing Tiger Uppercut FADC Ultra, without the hassle...
I also played as and against Ryu, Ken, Chun, Gouken, Blanka, Zangief, Vega, Gen, and Sakura - I think that was it...
I'm gonna head to bed in a bit, but that was so awesome to go from just chilling talking with friends playing Battlefield to playing the game that I'm so hyped to play two weeks early - oh boy.
Again, my line-up for new characters: Dee Jay, T. Hawk, Cody - with a dash of Hakan - oh, so, good.
